A premise of IAAR-SLATE is that learning about race, racism and racial equity should include student experiences beyond the campus community. IAAR-SLATE’s Community Component allows students to interact with and learn from community experts who have detailed knowledge about race, racism, and racial equity based on their lived experiences in and with communities, especially Black communities.  Two features comprise our Community Component.  First, starting in spring 2021, community experts will be in-residence at IAAR for a semester, sharing their knowledge of race and community life with IAAR-SLATE and other UNC courses, giving lectures on campus, and meeting with students individually and in groups.  Second, undergraduates will have an opportunity to participate and have access to the webinar and conference events led by Black Communities, an initiative co-hosted by IAAR to connect universities and Black communities especially through research.
